PAX East is an annual convention, this year running from March 11 to 13, put on by the team at Penny Arcade. You should go. Last year rocked.

Rooms
Just like last year, we will have an IF Hospitality Suite (in the Westin, we think). This will be open noon-midnight on Friday, noon-midnight Saturday, and noon-3pm Sunday.

In addition, we will have an IF function room (also in the Westin) on Saturday only. (See Dave's notes below.) We'll schedule our larger events there.

Both rooms will be open to the public, and will not require a PAX badge.

Official PAX events
PAX has confirmed the following two events on their schedule. (These events will require a PAX badge.) Neither is IF-specific, but these are the ones including IF people:

* "How to fund your game development project with Kickstarter" (Friday - 12:30 pm - Cat Theatre) -- Cindy Au, Andrew Plotkin, Joshua Newman, Evan Balster
* "Interactive Drama: Dialogue as Gameplay" (Friday - 2:00 pm - Cat Theatre) -- Jonathon Myers, Stephen Dinehart, Evan Skolnick, Emily Short, John Gonzalez

Events in our IF rooms
Schedules are not yet finalized (they're not even initialized), so please add panel or event ideas here.

* We all go out to eat before PAX (Thursday night). (Zarf will set this up)
* I'd like to propose we do an open Speed-IF on Saturday. We'll do the madlib topic selections in the early afternoon and people have until 10pm to submit their works to me. - David Cornelson
* An IF play event. (Basically a real-life ClubFloyd -- we throw a game up on a projector screen and give somebody the keyboard. Someone else reads the output out loud.) (What game?)
* Grue Street IF writer's workshop. (Somewhat modified to be a public event. People bring in-progress IF work, we play them together and critique.)
* Suggestion: IF-room discussion on puzzles as a way to tell story, not just a pacing device or way to control access
* "Setting as character in narrative games" -- I proposed this as a PAX panel (Andrew Plotkin, Rob Wheeler, Stephen Granade, John Gonzalez (Obsidian), Dean Tate (Harmonix)). It wasn't accepted, but we should do it for our own program. I've emailed everybody on the original list.
* "Meet the IF community" -- One of the Boston game people suggested that we should pick a time and say "If you're busy at PAX, but you want to stop by the IF suite and meet people at least once, *this* is a good time to do it." Just to avoid diffusion.
* A lightning introduction to Inform 7? -- (Aimed at newcomers, not IF regulars, obviously. Jmac and Zarf did this at Boston Gameloop last year.)
* Moving from inspiration to design? -- A lot of IF authors get lost in the steps from 'I want to write IF!' to how to go about doing so, so go through various starting points ("I want to evoke this kind of mood", "I want to explore this theme", "I want to emulate this kind of non-IF story", "I want to play with this kind of mechanic") and discuss how you'd go from there to fleshing out your ideas to picking a design process.
* IF Demo Fair. Authors have the opportunity to work on tech demonstrations during February, focusing on one of several themes (new types of NPC interaction, new UI formats). During PAX, these will be on show on laptops. There will be a dedicated Demo Fair time when we get together and play through the demos on a projector; authors will be invited to talk about why they did what they did, if they're present. It's still permitted to submit a demonstration if you're not going to be there, and you're welcome to accompany your demo with some authorial notes to be shared with everyone. This is not a competition, in that there will be no official prizes, judges, or winners, and anyone is free both to enter and to offer feedback on other entries. There is now an official announcement.

Alcott Conference Room for Saturday
We have a meeting room reserved at the Westin for Saturday from 12 noon until 12 midnight, connected to the convention. It's 1,035sqft (41ft x 29ft) and seats up to 100 people. We'll have a theatre (rowed seats) layout.

Internet Connectivity
Individual Wi-Fi codes can be purchased for the day at $50 on Saturday, but they need to be requested early. As the day gets later, they won't provide new codes. There is a slight delay as codes are created. If anyone wants to pre-order Wi-Fi access, let me know.

Food
We cannot bring any of our own food or beverages into the meeting room. There's a union rule that bars outside food. There may be signs in the room saying "No Food or Beverages Allowed". The cost of hotel menu food is prohibitive.

Demo Fair
Time yet to be determined: playthrough on a projector of the works submitted to the IF demo fair.

Swag and other supply plans
* Like last year: How-to-play-IF cards, nametag stickers, badge stickers. (Zarf)
* Hadean Lands promo buttons. (Zarf)
* A video projector. (Zarf)
* Munchies for IF suite

; Storytelling in the world of interactive fiction
: (Friday, March 26th, 5:30pm-6:30pm, Wyvern Theatre)

Text adventures have been quietly experimenting with narrative gaming for thirty years. Five authors from the amateur interactive fiction community discuss the design ideas in their games -- reordered storylines, unreliable narrators, deeply responsive NPCs -- and how they apply to other kinds of games. (Rob Wheeler (mod.), Robb Sherwin, Aaron Reed, Emily Short, Andrew Plotkin)
NOTE: Is there a way we can turn this into a table and find out exactly when people are arriving and departing? It would also be good to create a mailing list to communicate with people as most people will have smart phones. People could offer phone numbers for texting as well, but not on the wiki page of course. That would have to be a private document. Not sure how that could work as some people are very private.
It would also be good to create a mailing list to communicate with people as most people will have smart phones. People could offer phone numbers for texting as well, but not on the wiki page of course. That would have to be a private document. Not sure how that could work as some people are very private.
The IF Suite
I (zarf) have reserved a large suite on the top floor of the Back Bay Hilton. (Room number TBA.) We have the room from Thursday afternoon until Monday morning, although I currently plan to clear out on Sunday evening.

This shall be called the "People's Republic of Interactive Fiction Hospitality Suite".

The plan is to have the door open through Friday, Saturday, and some of Sunday. It will be both a rendezvous/hangout point for mudders and IF community folks, and a publicity center for newcomers interested in IF.

Plans
(Final scheduling details will have to wait until we have a PAX event schedule. Hopefully that won't be too late in February...)

I am Dan Shiovitz.
Inkyhttps://www.ifwiki.org/index.php?title=Time_travel&diff=11058Time travel2005-10-31T23:21:54Z
Inky: Fix a few typos

Travelling into the past to alter the future is a fascinating concept, but has a unique set of problems and issues ...

Several existing IF games feature time travel as a major theme:
* First Things First (J. Robinson Wheeler)
* All Things Devours (Half sick of shadows)
* Tapestry (Daniel Ravipinto)
* Jigsaw (Graham Nelson)

Rules of time travel
The "rules" of time travel vary by game, but here are a few common ones.
* Your past self may not meet your future self. In All Things Devours, "time unravels" if this occurs. Not all games include the possibility of meeting yourself, however.
* No contradictions allowed. If there was a potato in the pot at 10:00am and you go back before that time and remove it, the same potato (or an identical looking one) had better be back in the pot again by ten o'clock. (An unusual solution to this problem is just to close your eyes so that you don't see it in the first place).
* Alternatively, contradictions may split the universe in two - one future in which an event does not happen, and one in which it does. The problem then may be to go back and undo the damage, restoring the future to the desired one (as in the movie Back to the Future II) - or the whole idea may be to change the past so that the current "future" is made better (cf. Trinity).

Time travel hints
* If you can go back to a time in your own life, perhaps you can do so repeatedly - so there are not only two of you, but three, or four ... without meeting yourself, there may still be a way to give something to another one of your selves.
* You may be able to help yourself in some way in the future. In the novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, people pay for their incredibly expensive reservation at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe by investing a single penny and collecting the interest at the end of time.
* Knowledge of future events may also be an advantage (eg. the lottery numbers in tomorrow's draw).

Notes
* Time travel allows for some very bizarre possibilities. It would be possible to transport an object to the past and leave it there, or to communicate an idea to someone in the past. If an object is left there, then it will be that very same object in the future (which you then took back into the past) ... but then, who made the object ? And if an idea such as "how to create a teleportation device" is communicated to someone in the past, then that same knowledge in the future came from that person ... but then who was its inventor ?

The Interactive Fiction FAQ from ifwiki was created to contain succinct, up-to-date information about interactive fiction for those who are new to IF or to the IF community. The FAQ is intended to give brief, helpful answers to those questions that do actually come up frequently, and to direct readers to the most important online resources on the topic. While it is meant to be a useful part of ifwiki and to have current, useful links, this FAQ also should serve well as a stand-alone document that someone might read offline or print out. Another resource for newcomers that is helpful (although not recently updated) is Roger Firth's Ifaq.

What is "interactive fiction"?
In brief, "interactive fiction" indicates programs (sometimes called "games" or, less often, "works") that let you type commands to a character. This character wanders around in a simulated world of some sort, usually one that is described in text. "Text adventure" and "text game" have been used to mean pretty much the same thing. Examples include Adventure, Zork, Deadline, Planetfall, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Hobbit, and Curses. Some people include graphical adventure games such as Myst when they use the term, but those sorts of games aren't the focus of this FAQ or of the IF Community. The ifwiki offers a formal definition of interactive fiction; there is a longer discussion of the topic in the rec.arts.int-fiction FAQ; and other definitions can be found in various essays and books.

What happened to Infocom (Magnetic Scrolls, Level 9, etc.)?
None of the companies that produced IF during the 1980s are still around and producing IF. Infocom was acquired by Activision in 1989, for instance, and is now a (not very active) "label" of that company. Interactive fiction from this era is often hard to find outside of abandonware sites and online auction sites, although some of it has been made available to the public by the company that produced it. Plenty of people are still creating IF, however, and there are hundreds of free new games that have been developed since the "commercial era" of interactive fiction.

How can I download and play IF?
The IF Archive is the major repository for free interactive fiction, and includes hundreds of recent games, games in many different languages, and many historic games. You'll probably want to download games from there, using the friendly interface provided by Baf's Guide to the IF Archive.

Authors have made some game available for you to play on the Web or download in stand-alone form. But you will usually need to download both an interpreter for your particular platform (a sort of "reader" or "player") and the particular game's "story file" (the data file that is read by the interpreter).

If you use Windows and want to run the zcode file curses.z5, for instance, you need a Windows zcode interpreter. Windows Frotz is a popular one. One you have installed Windows Frotz, you will be able to play any zcode interactive fiction just by downloading and opening the file, which usually will end with .z5 or .z8.

You can find a popular interpreter for your platform and IF format in the following table:
These are not all the interpreters available, just some of the most popular ones from the most popular platforms. The IF Archive has a comprehensive, if not exactly friendly, list of interpreters that you can download:
Where can I find out what games I might enjoy?
* Baf's Guide is a complete listing of the games on the IF Archive. Most games have mini-reviews, and there are powerful search tools, but like the Archive itself it might be overwhelming to trawl through.
* The Usenet group rec.games.int-fiction is a good place to ask, particularly if you have specific tastes.
* Interactive Fiction Ratings is a site that lets anyone give IF games ratings out of 10, and publishes a list of (among other things) the highest-scoring games. This gives some idea of which games enjoy the most popularity in the community, although it shouldn't be considered the final word on the quality of games.
* Looking back through past XYZZY winners or games that did well in the IF Competition can also give you some idea of which games are (or were) highly thought of.
* There are several sites that collect and publish reviews: SPAG, Brass Lantern, and IF-Review are the most prominent of these.
* Several members of the community have extenstive collections of their personal reccomendations: Emily Short and Sam Kibo Ashwell, for example.

What can I do when I get stuck?
Some games have in-game hints. For others, hints or a walkthrough (a list of commands that will win the game, sometimes annotated) may be available on the IF Archive or elsewhere on the Web. If Baf's Guide doesn't list any files for the game you're playing, search the Web for the name of that game and the term "walkthrough" or "solution." You can also ask fellow players for a hint on rec.games.int-fiction. Just be sure to include a spoiler warning and spoiler space before you reveal any details of the game, so you don't ruin the game for others by giving away some of its surprises.

How can I post a review of a game I've finished?
If you like, you can simply post a review to rec.games.int-fiction, as many people traditionally do with the Comp game after the Comp has ended. You can also submit your review to SPAG or IF Review, or post it on your own site or blog.

What is this "IF Comp"?
The IF Competition is an annual, Internet-wide competition for short games (ones you can complete in less than two hours), started in 1996 and currently run by Stephen Granade. Anyone who is online can vote in the competition. Having played and rated five games is the only qualification necessary for judges. In recent years there have been dozens of entries and hundreds who voted: The 2004 Comp had 38 games voted on by 174 judges.

How can I write my own game?
Although some people try to develop IF from scratch in general-purpose languages, winners of the IF Comp and developers of successful longer games have shows that it can be a good idea to use one of the highly capable and free interactive fiction development systems. Inform, TADS, and Hugo are the most powerful and cross-platform of the options, but there are others. You can seek help from fellow developers on rec.arts.int-fiction as you work, and avail yourself of some of the extensive documentation, tutorial material, and sample code that is online.

Which development system is best?
No one knows for sure, but a safe way for you to decide for yourself is to review all of them at Roger Firth's Cloak of Darkness page. You should also consider the development communities for different systems, what sample code and tutorial and reference information is available for each, the whole range of these systems' capabilities (including multimedia capaibilities, if these are important to you), and whether interpreters are available on the platforms you care about.

Why not create my own IF development system?
You're welcome to, and we're all very glad that people such as Graham Nelson (creator of Inform) and Mike Roberts (creator of TADS) have done this. There are sometimes discussions about how to create IF development systems on rec.arts.int-fiction and on ifMUD's #craft channel; you can also check ifwiki's Building a New Interactive Fiction System. While some people will be glad to offer reactions and advice, many people on raif and #craft do prefer to discuss writing games, and almost all of them now are effectively using some existing system such as Inform, TADS, or Hugo. If you're developing a new system, it will certainly help to be very familiar with how all of these existing systems work, so you can imitate their better features and avoid imitating anything you think is a mistake.

How do I get people to test my game?
Very good question. It's very important to have others test and review your game before releasing it. The IF Beta Site Info Page has information about beta-testing, including links to several articles about how to helpfully test games, and it also provides a way for you to sign up as a tester and submit your game to be tested. There are several other ways to find testers. If you've tested someone else's game, you might ask them to reciprocate. You can also politely ask for testers on rec.arts.int-fiction or on ifMUD.

How do I get people to play my game?
Releasing it in the IF Comp can be a very effective way, if it fits the bill by being a two-hour game that is not based on previous copyrighted work. There are other competitions at other points in the year which are less popular but still provide good ways to release a game. If you don't release your game as part of a competition, you should announce your game on rec.games.int-fiction. Although the editors of IF review sites will learn about it from rgif, it's fine to politely bring your work to their attention by email if it hasn't been reviewed after a while.

You may also want to publicize your game outside the IF community, if there are other groups who might be interested in it: e.g., Latin teachers, if your game is in Latin; the Electronic Literature Organization, if your game is written for a literary audience; the Keeler Society, if your game is an adaptation of a Harry Stephen Keeler novel.
