Write a short IF game in two hours! Actually, we'll give you until 10pm, so you can attend the rest of the convention too. Work alone or in groups. The game theme will be a surprise, but I will provide I7 and TADS 3 templates for people to jump start their work. Included in the template will be standard Infocom spellcasting capabilities which will be required for the Speed-IF. I would actually like as many people as possible to code up at least one minimally implemented spell. We'll share all the coded spells before starting the event. (Hosted by me, David Cornelson)

[[ClubFloyd]] Update (from Jacqueline): We'll be playing some of the PAX East Speed IFs over the next ClubFloyd or two.  If you didn't attend PAX but want to submit a game, or if you already wrote a game but would like to update your game file, David Cornelson will continue to accept files and update the list below over the next week.  See you at 2pm EST on April 3 in the Toyshop on ifMUD!

I (zarf) have reserved a large suite on the top floor of the [http://www1.hilton.com/en_US/hi/hotel/BOSBHHH-Hilton-Boston-Back-Bay-Massachusetts/index.do Back Bay Hilton], room number 2305. This shall be called the "[[People's Republic of Interactive Fiction]] Hospitality Suite". It is currently open for business, from noon to midnight on Friday and Saturday, March 25-26, and from noon to 4pm on Sunday, March 27.

The plan is to have the door open through Friday, Saturday, and some of Sunday. It will be both a rendezvous/hangout point for mudders and IF community folks, and a publicity center for newcomers interested in IF.

* Badge stickers for anyone who drops by the suite (may be same as ribbons). (Or maybe these can be simple: a prompt and cursor? --AAR) (Prompt and cursor was the first idea I had, but I may use a Zorkmid design that I made for another project. --jrw)

* "Starter" CD with some interpreter software and a few appropriate beginner games. (I still think this is a nice idea, but I don't know if I or anyone have the resources to make enough. Maybe a less medium-centric solution might be better, like a USB key chained to a table, or a wireless network with a shared folder containing the disk image? --AAR)

* A barebones "How To Get Started in IF" handout, defining some basic terms and giving relevant links (along with searchable phrases) to both more expansive instructions and most useful game/review sites. (At one point Emily made a booklet like this, and I did the cover art for it. I was almost thinking of printing the cover art as a poster to bring to the suite. --jrw)

''Re the feelie idea: I looked at geocoin sites -- thinking about a fancy zorkmid coin -- there are some great products available but they're expensive, $2 to $4 each. I'd want to have at least 200 for the weekend, so under a buck would be preferable. Wooden coins? Acrylic? --Z'' (Oh! In fact, I created the zorkmid design because Jota wanted to make zorkmid geocoins. Hmm. I guess I should send that to you. --jrw)

CONGRATULATIONS EVERYBODY!

We threw an event to remember.

IF Summit 2010 at PAX-East

[Penny Arcade Expo East] -- [PAX East official schedule]

IF-Related Events

Storytelling in the world of interactive fiction
(Friday, March 26th, 5:30pm-6:30pm, Wyvern Theatre (312))

Text adventures have been quietly experimenting with narrative gaming for thirty years. Five authors from the amateur interactive fiction community discuss the design ideas in their games -- reordered storylines, unreliable narrators, deeply responsive NPCs -- and how they apply to other kinds of games. (J. Robinson Wheeler (mod.), Robb Sherwin, Aaron Reed, Emily Short, Andrew Plotkin)

GET LAMP Panel/Screening
(Friday, March 26th, 9:30pm, Naga Theatre (210))

Premiere of Get Lamp!

The current plan: the main GET LAMP episode at 9:30, followed by a panel on stage of people interviewed for the film. (Hosted by Jason Scott. Panel: Steve Meretzky, Dave Lebling, Brian Moriarty, Nick Montfort, Andrew Plotkin, Don Woods)

PAX Speed-IF
(Saturday, March 27th, 1:30pm-2:30 pm, IF Suite)

Write a short IF game in two hours! Actually, we'll give you until 10pm, so you can attend the rest of the convention too. Work alone or in groups. The game theme will be a surprise, but I will provide I7 and TADS 3 templates for people to jump start their work. Included in the template will be standard Infocom spellcasting capabilities which will be required for the Speed-IF. I would actually like as many people as possible to code up at least one minimally implemented spell. We'll share all the coded spells before starting the event. (Hosted by me, David Cornelson)

ClubFloyd Update (from Jacqueline): We'll be playing some of the PAX East Speed IFs over the next ClubFloyd or two. If you didn't attend PAX but want to submit a game, or if you already wrote a game but would like to update your game file, David Cornelson will continue to accept files and update the list below over the next week. See you at 2pm EST on April 3 in the Toyshop on ifMUD!

Dispelling the Invisibility -- IF Outreach
(Saturday, March 27th, 7:00pm-8:00pm, IF Suite)

PAX Speed-IF wrap-up
(Saturday, March 27th, 10:00pm-11:00 pm, IF Suite)

Everybody shows off the games they wrote.

Action Castle!
(Sunday, March 28th, 10:30am-11:30am, Wyvern Theatre (312))

Parsely: Action Castle is the runaway hit of 2009, debuting at GenCon and PAX! Now you can “ GO EAST ” and “ LIGHT LAMP ” with the best of them. Canst thou master Action Castle before death claims thee? Parsely games are inspired by Ye Olde Text Parsers from days of yore, but substituting a live human for the computer parser. No Hints Please -- Adaptive Difficulty Strategies
(Sunday, March 28th, 1:30pm-2:30pm, IF Suite)

Jim Munroe, Aaron Reed, Dave Gilbert.

Purple Blurb
(Monday, March 29th, 5:30pm-7:00pm, MIT 14-310 -- map)

Emily Short and Jeremy Freese present IF at MIT. (Purple Blurb hosted by Nick Montfort.)

The IF Suite

I (zarf) have reserved a large suite on the top floor of the Back Bay Hilton, room number 2305. This shall be called the "People's Republic of Interactive Fiction Hospitality Suite".
