The "link" template provides a way to store both the original URL and the URL of an archived snapshot of the page. If the original link should die, inserting the word "dead" in front of "link" will switch it over to the "dead link" template instead, which uses the archive URL.

If there is not already an archived snapshot available at the Internet Archive, requesting a snapshot while the link is live will ensure that at least one snapshot will be available later if the link dies.

To search for a snapshot of a page or take a new snapshot with minimal clicking, you can add bookmarklets to your browser bookmarks.

Arguments for this template:

  • url (required) the original link.
  • archive (recommended): the full url of an archived snapshot of the link.
  • link text (unnamed parameter): the text that appears on the wiki page (for instance, "Review").

For example, when the "link" template is used, the following

{{link|url=http://emshort.wordpress.com/2016/06/05/the-mary-jane-of-tomorrow/|archive=https://web.archive.org/web/20160608153033/http://emshort.wordpress.com/2016/06/05/the-mary-jane-of-tomorrow/|The Mary Jane of Tomorrow}}

shows up as

The Mary Jane of Tomorrow

and leads to the original link.
