The "link" template provides a way to store both the original URL and the URL of an archived snapshot of the page. The snapshot can be used if/when the original link is found dead. Taking the extra step of storing a page at the Internet Archive when the link is still live--you can do this with the click of a button, using [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Using_the_Wayback_Machine#JavaScript_bookmarklet a bookmarklet]--will ensure there is an archived snapshot available later, and will give you a URL that you can paste it into the template as the "archive" parameter.

This link template provides a way to store both the original URL and the URL of an archived snapshot of the page. If the original link should die, inserting the word "dead" in front of "link" will switch it over to the dead link template instead. The "dead link" template points to the archive URL, if present.

If there is not already an archived snapshot available at the Internet Archive, requesting a snapshot while the link is live will increase the odds that at least one snapshot will be available later if the link dies.

To search for a snapshot of a page or take a new snapshot with minimal clicking, you can add bookmarklets to your browser bookmarks.

Arguments

  • url (Required.) Specifies the live url.
  • archive (Optional.) Specifies the full url of an archived snapshot of the page (for instance, from the Internet Archive).
  • link text (Optional, unnamed argument.) The text that appears on the link (for instance, "Review").

Basic Format

{{link|url=http://www.original-link.com|archive=http://www.archived-version.com|Link Text}}

Example

{{link|url=https://emshort.wordpress.com/2016/06/05/the-mary-jane-of-tomorrow/ |archive=https://web.archive.org/web/20160608153033/http://emshort.wordpress.com/2016/06/05/the-mary-jane-of-tomorrow/|The Mary Jane of Tomorrow}}

appears as

The Mary Jane of Tomorrow

and points to the original url.
