Note about the "Opal O'Donnell" pseudonym
For a while, Adam Cadre claimed that "Opal O'Donnell" had assisted him by entering his game Photopia into IF Comp 1998 under her name and e-mail address. Supposedly, Adam had already talked to Opal about borrowing a game element from her ChickenComp game (which she agreed to), and by letting him enter the competition under her name as a pseudonym, he was able to avoid comparisons with his earlier game I-0.

But, more recently, Adam revealed that there never was an Opal O'Donnell: it was just a pseudonym. See the Photopia Phaq for full details.
Baf's Guide
2013-11-21T19:29:49Z

Palladmial: to indicate Baf's Guide's lack of updates and plug IFDB

Baf's Guide to the IF Archive was a website that attempted to catalogue every game within the massive IF Archive. Carl Muckenhoupt, known as "Baf", created the guide in 1995 and maintained and upgraded it over the years, assisted by a small army of contributors.

Structure
Visitors to Baf's Guide primarily searched for a game by its title or its author. A game listing on Baf's Guide would have included quite a bit of information about that game, including its genre(s), year of release, publisher, platform, features within the game (does it have a maze? just one-room? a female protagonist? offensive content?, etc.), which competition(s) it was in, sometimes a short review, and more.

However, the primary feature that every game listing had were links to the files within the IF Archive so that the games could be directly downloaded and played.

Decline
Around 2009 or so, updates to Baf's Guide slowed to a halt, and the site is currently down indefinitely. IFDB now serves the purpose Baf's Guide had, by cataloguing information, reviews, and links to games in the IF Archive.
Beta-testing

The process of allowing people other than the author to play a game that is otherwise essentially complete, for the purpose of discovering flaws and bugs before the official public release.
Beta-testing is an IF form of usability testing, which also helps the author identify what parts of a work-in-progress the players enjoy most.
Beta-testing is an IF form of usability testing, which also helps the author identify what parts of a work-in-progress the players enjoy most.
Notes:
# Ties in first round voting can mean there's more than 5 finalists per category, and therefore more than 50 nominations for a given year.
# In 1996, there were only 8 categories. The award categories Best Individual PC and Best Use of Medium had not yet been created. Also, there was a three-way tie for Best Individual NPC, which is why the table has "10 of 8c.", meaning ten awards for eight categories.

* The deadline for second-round voting is Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at midnight Eastern Standard Time.
She's the one who tallies up who won, and the presenters didn't have that info, so the show really couldn't go on without her. So the ceremony was rescheduled to Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 3 PM EDT. Sorry about that.

How It Begins
Carrying only your trusty six shooter and numerous bullets, you are standing on the rolling planes of a post-industrial western town. Your friend Elias is in the hands of sheriff Clayton, who will hang him at noon. It looks like you're going to have to shoot some people

Notable Features
* Instead of giving directional commands, you can only go 'forwards' or 'backwards' along a linear string of locations.
* Most of the puzzles involve shooting things or people, but there is no (random or deterministic) combat system.
* Many of the puzzles involve careful timing.
Dates
* The deadline for first-round voting is Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at midnight Eastern Standard Time.
* The deadline for second-round voting is Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at midnight Eastern Standard Time.
* The online award ceremony was to be held on ifMUD on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at 3 PM Eastern Daylight Time—but alas, Eileen didn't show. She's the one who tallies up who won, and the presenters didn't have that info, so the show really couldn't go on without her. So the ceremony was rescheduled to Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 3 PM EDT. Sorry about that.
