Er, how the heck did you get the compass rose in "A New Life" in that state? It looks like you must be in the starting location, but there's no NW connection there. Possibly it's not getting overwritten correctly? I can't duplicate it in zoom. Anyway, some more info, which probably is too trivial to actually go in the article, on the compass rose in "A New Life."

*The color of the central character can change with the status of an item that one may acquire during the game. 
*The lack of up / down room connections in the game is partly a reaction to the inelegance of what that would do to the compass rose. 
*There is one other situation where characters in the compass rose can change to represent things that the player can see in the distance; that situation mirrors the one with the mountains at the start of the game.

I apologize for the confusion/misrepresentation with the NW connection. I added it in because it was slightly easier than adding a few "nbsp" characters to make the diagram align properly, and because all the other examples aren't snapshots from their games either, but representative of the grids that they use. But I didn't fill in all the spots in the ''A New Life'' example since that would remove the point of the example. But anyway, I was wrong to add the NW, and I'll remove it from the example.
