A coding exercise is a game written in order to learn, or experiment with, an IF authoring system. Within the context of IF, obviously immature and buggy games by new authors (which are released in spite of this) are often assumed to be coding exercises, so the term has negative connotations; it is not unheard of for competent and enjoyable games to develop out of coding exercises, however.
