The virtual machine used by Infocom in its works of interactive fiction. The IF language Inform originally compiled games for the z-machine.

The "Z" stands for "Zork".

A virtual machine invented by Infocom, Inc, in 1979 in order to run their Zork (hence the z) mainframe adventure game on personal computers.
