Bob Bates and Mike Verdu founded Legend Entertainment in 1989 and published seven text-adventure games, including Steve Meretzky's Spellcasting trilogy and two adaptations of Frederik Pohl's Gateway stories. In 1993 it switched to graphic adventure games, in 1995 it stopped publishing software and concentrated on game development, in 1998 it was acquired by another company that was acquired by another company which had acquired Atari and assumed its name. Atari shut down Legend in 2004.
