Templates are used by IFWiki to insert a standard bit of reusable text. Many templates take parameters that permit customizable usage of the templates.
To add a template to the Templates category, make sure you use the noinclude tags to prevent pages that use the template from being added in the Templates category as well, eg:
<noinclude>[[Category:Templates|PAGENAME]]</noinclude>
