Dungeons and Dragons
From IFWiki
A role-playing game invented in the mid-70s by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson.
Since the use of small figurines in rule-based military combat games is nothing new, Gygax became something of a cult hero when he chose a fantasy setting.
Will Crowther, the creator of the original Advent, was an avid D&D player, even before the game was officially published. Don Woods is sometimes credited with turning Crowther's cave map into a fantasy game, but Woods told avventuretestuali that while he was familiar with Tolkien, he had never played any role-playing game until an Adventure fan introduced it to him.
