Monster
From IFWiki
In an IF context, a monster is a large or dangerous creature which forms a physical threat or obstruction to the player. Monsters sometimes have a secondary function as NPCs, but need not do so.
Uses
- Monsters are frequently used to guard exits, as a variation on a locked door puzzle.
- A monster may chase the PC, forming a motivation to move quickly, or otherwise create a timed puzzle.
- Conversely, the PC may be chasing the monster, as in Hunter, in Darkness (Andrew Plotkin, 1999, Z-code).
- Getting rid of monsters can form the motivating purpose of an entire game.
Dealing with Monsters
- In some games, the only solution is combat; most IF, however, will require other methods.
