The Commodore 16 (and 116) was designed as low-cost entry microcomputer, Commodore International’s replacement for their VIC-20.

Its sister machine was the higher specification Commodore Plus/4 which was aimed at a more serious user than Commodore’s own C64. Neither machine was particularly successful in their home market, being sold only between 1984 and 1985.

The C16 and Plus/4 are broadly compatible with each other but have no cross-compatibility with the more popular VIC-20 and C64 machines.
