This page will attempt to explain the thinking behind the competition icons used on pages about works of interactive fiction on the IFWiki, and also how to specify them. This page should be considered part of the IFWiki:Works (style guide) page.
Competitions with just participants

If the work is just a participant at a competition, then it just gets a simple green ribbon and the label "Participant".Ranked Competitions
The default case
Many competitions are voted on and ranked into a best to worst order. The works at these competitions get basic placement ribbons:

First place winners at a comp use the comp1st template. Specify the competition name as the first argument, and placement phrase (eg: 1st of 6) as the second argument.

Second place winners at a comp use the comp2nd template. Specify the competition name as the first argument, and placement phrase (eg: 2nd of 6) as the second argument.

The IF Art Show doesn't have rankings, but it can still use the same templates as basic ranked competitions and use the same basic placement ribbons:

Best of Show winners at the IF Art Show use the comp1st template. Specify the competition name as the first argument, and Best of Show) as the second argument. Entries at the IF Art Show that failed to win one of the above awards use the compnth template. Specify the competition name as the first argument, and an appropriate placement phrase (eg: Participant - Portrait) as the second argument.IF Comp
The Annual IF Competition ribbons are similar to the basic placement ribbons, but with the compass rose on them:

Fourth to last place participants at IF Comp use the ifcnth template. Specify the year as the first argument. The second argument is freeform, and should be something like 16th of 27 to show where the work placed.Award Competitions
The default case

There are some award comps not handled explicitly by IFWiki. For works that win awards in those competitions, use the compw template. Specify the competition name as the first argument, and the award name as the second argument.XYZZY Awards

XYZZY Award Winners use the xaw template. Specify the year as the first argument, and the award as the second argument.

XYZZY Award Finalists use the xaf template. Specify the year as the first argument, and the award as the second argument.It may be desirable to combine XYZZY Awards together, should a work be so fortunate to be awarded more than one. I suggest that the combo templates have names like xaw2 (for winning two awards), xaw3 (for winning 3 awards), and so on. Likewise, xaf2 for a work that had two finalist placements, xaf3 for 3 finalist placements, and so on. And, maybe, things like xawf if a work got one of each.

Works that are InsideADRIFT Award Winners use the iaaw template. The first argument is the year; the second argument is the award name.
I suggest shortening "Best in game implementation" to "Best implementation", and "Most unusual ADRIFT setting/plot of the year" to "Most unusual setting/plot".Erins

Works that win an award at the Erins use the erinsw template. Specify the competition year as the first argument, and the award name as the second argument.If necessary, combo templates like erinsw2 could be added if a work won two Erins awards.
