Parser-based interactive fiction is a kind of interactive fiction in which the player types instructions (for example, "Take apple" or "Unlock the door with the golden key"), and the game's parser analyzes the instructions to determine what happens next. Examples:

This value was automatically assigned to some games based on their authoring system. We would like all of these games to be individually reclassified as Parser, or one of the other values, once we've confirmed the game's interaction style.

A choice-based IF game is one where, at each prompt (or page end), a short list of choices is always explicitly presented to the player to choose from to advance the story. The game is not parser-driven. The choices might be numbered, lettered, or clicked on with the mouse cursor. Examples:

A parser-choice hybrid game is one which cannot be easily categorized into parser or choice-based. Examples:

"Other" includes games that were written using an IF authoring system but which cannot be truly regarded as Interactive Fiction. Z-machine games of this type are sometimes known as Z-abuses. Examples:
